Rethinking Formative Assessment with Real-Time AI Feedback

In most university science courses, the assessment model looks something like this: students attend lectures, complete homework, and then take a midterm exam. The exam reveals who understood the material and who did not. By that point, it is too late to do anything about it.

The Intervention Window
The most important feature of real-time formative assessment is that it keeps the intervention window open. Instead of discovering on the midterm that half the class misunderstood a core concept, the professor learns about it in week three and can address it in week four.
For the student, the feedback loop is even tighter. The AI provides corrective guidance in the moment, within the same conversation where the misconception surfaced. There is no waiting for graded papers or office hours.
Moving Beyond Grades
We believe the future of assessment in STEM education is less about ranking students and more about understanding learning. The question should not be "Did this student get a 72 or an 85?" but rather "What does this student understand, what are they confused about, and what is the most effective next step for their learning?"
